Dunes City relies on volunteers, so if we want to improve the park we need to pitch in. VitalBodies created this article to get folks thinking how we can better the park using organic techniques in a low maintenance volunteer way. VitalBodies.net is preparing two maps of the park. One map that can serve to show the park in it's current state, and another map to show how we could work together to make the park better. The map (shown above) is a work in process. More measurements are being taken and plants identified as time allows to fine tune the map. One way you can help, is to identify the plants in the park for the park map. We hope to have a layered map with a layer that shows the trees/canopy and a layer that shows the shrubs and the rest of the park features.
One of only two parks in Dunes City.
The park could be of value to the community as a seed/plant bank, and a host for native plants threatened with extinction. Culinary and medicinal herb gardens could be planted and food grown that could be used during times of extended disaster or special events and for adding beauty. There are a number of small projects that would make the park look nicer like a new mail box stand that is USPS height compliant (taller) and a park bench. A gazebo and a sun dial would also be nice additions. There are some plants that tend to take over that could be removed like Ivy and there is salal that needs to be kept in check. We are currently studying what plants can be grown that can survive deer and slugs. Solar powered Wifi has also been suggested for the park as a possible project if anyone has the ways and means. Comments, volunteers, plant identification and suggestions welcome. Additional ideas that reduce the amount of lawn to mow and weeds to whack are helpful also.
