Marcel Wanders, YLighting and FLOS Art Contest

Every now and then I like to do artwork that is different or more challenging than what I am used to. While shopping for lighting I came across the Marcel Wanders, YLighting and FLOS Art Contest and immediately knew this was my chance. Often, there is something I need to draw like a fence design, invention or illustration and I draw that. This contest was more challenging, in that, it was something outside of my own relativity altogether. I would need to think differently and shift to even begin.

"What came to mind is that all of these different people and businesses cross and come together in the amazing magazine ads their products appear in..."

This contest required that you integrate the provided pattern into your design. The pattern provided is beautiful and is a very stand out pattern so it would likely dominate the design to some degree which was factor. To make this even more of a challenge, I decide to use an illustration program (Inkscape) rather than a photo and paint program (GIMP) and I also decided not to design a product with the pattern as that is what Marcel does. Then there were the judges, what would appeal to three very different judges? Marcel is a product designer, YLighting is a high end modern lighting web store and FLOS is a company that manufactures lights - at the very least. What came to mind, is that all of these different people and businesses cross and come together in the amazing magazine ads their products appear in. The artwork was done in SVG so everything can be resized or changed as need with ease. The photo, I believe, is from a GAP ad and Marcel might want to choose a different photo for example.

My concept for this artwork is the back drop for a magazine ad where they could place additional information or product if they needed to or wanted to, or not. The idea was to look back in time from the future, a future where life itself was the center of everything people did. A better future that could happen, if created by designers and design with the ultimate top priority, life itself.
